County Championship: Tom Latham, a New Zealand wicketkeeper and batter, has agreed to a brief contract with the Surrey County Cricket Club. The 31-year-old will join the team in the middle of the current campaign and participate in five County Championship games between June and July.
Latham, who has extensive experience in county cricket, will come just before Surrey’s June 11 match against Kent. Latham is currently playing for New Zealand, which is currently playing a three-match T20I series against Sri Lanka.
Latham has recently been named the Blackcaps’ captain for their upcoming T20 International matches against Pakistan as well as their ODI and T20 International series against Pakistan.
Tom Latham: I’m happy to be joining Surrey.
The 31-year-old came forth to discuss the agreement and how thrilled he was to join the squad and strengthen their roster once Surrey and Latham’s agreement was made public.
“I’m overjoyed to be a part of Surrey this summer. I’ve had a lot of fun playing county cricket in the past, and I like the challenge that English conditions present. The opportunity to represent Surrey at The Oval, one of the top cricket venues in the world, is something I’m looking forward to because of the team’s illustrious past,” According to Latham, according to ESPNcricinfo.
“I’m excited to work with Rory Burns, Gareth Batty, and the squad this year and will do everything I can to help them successfully defend the championship,” Latham continued.
Alec Stewart, the director of cricket for Surrey, also commented on Latham and his entry into the lineup, saying that the team will benefit from Latham’s expertise.
At a time when we are quite likely to lose players to England for the Ashes, Stewart stated, “I’m looking forward to having Tom to The Kia Oval. He is an international cricketer with a wealth of experience who will add to the quality of our batting line-up.”
