Vijay Hazare Trophy: In a high-scoring Vijay Hazare Trophy Group D encounter on Saturday at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai, Jammu and Kashmir stunned defending Ranji champions Madhya Pradesh by two wickets to earn one of their most memorable victories in team history. As Madhya Pradesh posted a massive 342 for 9 after being called to bat, opener Yash Dubey hammered a run-a-ball 121 (13x4s), while his opening partner Abhishek Bhandari hit 74 (81b; 9x4s, 2×6). However, Jammu and Kashmir pulled off a heist as openers Vivrant Sharma (69), Henan Nazir (68), and Abdul Samad (66) all scored half-centuries to lay the groundwork for Abid Mushtaq’s outstanding counterattacking knock of 42 from 19 balls, which secured the victory.
In opposition to players like Avesh Khan and Kuldeep Sen, Mushtaq hammered three sixes and as many boundaries. When Avesh (3/86) dismissed him in the 47th over with Jammu and Kashmir still requiring 31 off 21 balls, though, drama ensued.
With four balls remaining, Sahil Lotra (23 not out from 11b; 4x4s) completed the chase.
As the pair continued to hold on following Mushtaq’s dismissal in a match-winning 34-run unbroken partnership for the ninth wicket, Auqib Nabi (11 not out; 9 balls, 1×4) provided excellent support.
But for the Jammu and Kashmir batters, which began on a watchful note, it appeared an improbable chase at the innings break.
Opening pair Sharma and Jatin Wadhwan (17) put together 81 runs in the same number of deliveries, but off-spinner Saransh Jain bowled both batsmen with only 19 runs added, derailing their pursuit.
After captain Shubham Pundir (6) was cheaply removed, they were facing certain defeat with 230 runs needed in 167 balls.
However, Samad and Nazir collaborated on 117 runs to repair the damage. With the addition of just 11 runs, Avesh fired both of them.
Mushtaq then delivered a superb counterattacking knock to keep Jammu and Kashmir in the game. On the basis of the net-run rate, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttarakhand placed second and third in Group D, respectively.
