ICC Code of Conduct: For violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the third One-Day International of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League series against Afghanistan at Pallekele on Wednesday, Sri Lankan player Wanindu Hasaranga received an official reprimand.
Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “showing dissatisfaction at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match,” was judged to have been broken by Hasaranga.
Hasaranga’s disciplinary record has also been updated with one demerit point; this was his first infraction in a 24-month period.
The incident happened in Afghanistan’s innings’ 26th over. When the TV umpire reversed a leg-before judgement on review after batter Najibullah Zadran had initially been given out, Hasaranga expressed his dissatisfaction by pointing to the massive screen.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Hasaranga acknowledged the violation and agreed to the punishment suggested by Ranjan Madugalle of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
The accusation was made by the on-field umpires Nitin Menon and Lyndon Hannibal, the third umpire Raveendra Wimalasari, and the fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge.
A player is suspended if they receive four or more suspension points in a two-year period instead of demerit points. One Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is are forfeited when a player accumulates two suspension points, depending on whatever event occurs first for the player.
Level 1 violations are punished with one or two demerit points, a minimum official reprimand, and a maximum fine of 50% of the player’s match fee. Demerit Points are recorded on a player’s or player support staff member’s disciplinary record for twenty-four months before being deleted.
After an outstanding display of batting by Ibrahim Zadran, Afghanistan set a target of 314, which Sri Lanka made an incredible effort to chase down. In the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League, they improved to ninth place and tied the series at one game each.
