Women’s U-19 World Cup: The roster for the inaugural Under-19 World Cup, which will begin in South Africa in January 2023, was unveiled by Cricket Australia. A 15-person squad was announced for the competition, and many well-known Women’s Big Bash League players found themselves on the roster for the major event.
Australia named its U-19 T20 World Cup team and five non-travelling reserves after the U19 Female National Championships in Perth came to a close. Eight of the players picked to the squad have prior experience, having either participated in one-day domestic competitions for their states or played in the WBBL.
They include the all-rounder Ella Hayward, who made her debut in 2020 and has since established herself as a regular thanks to the off-spin prowess she showed while playing for the Melbourne Renegades and Victoria. Leg-spinners Amy Smith of Tasmania and the Hobart Hurricanes, whose skill on the surface will now enable her to take on the position of an all-rounder in the U-19 team.
While both Rhys McKenna and Jade Allen, a pace bowler, have contracts with NSW, a batter named Claire Moore has contracts with Victoria and the Stars. In the recently finished season, Lucy Hamilton, a left-arm pacer from Queensland, made her WBBL debut with the Brisbane Heat. Ella Wilson of the Adelaide Strikers and Charis Bekker, a spin-bowling all-rounder for the Perth Scorchers, are two older players with a tonne of experience.
Due to age, big players lose out.
Pitcher Paris Bowdler has been named to the U19s squad after making an unexpected WBBL debut for the Renegades after being called up at the last minute to play against the Sixers in Ballarat owing to an injury to Josie Dooley. The players had to be 18 or younger by August 31, 2022, therefore Darcie Brown and Phoebe Litchfield, two 19-year-old members of the current Australian senior team, as well as WBBL regulars Georgia Voll, Tess Flintoff, and Charli Knott, were ineligible for selection.
The team will be led by former Sydney Sixers and Australia pacer Sarah Aley, who will be assisted on the coaching staff by Erin Osborne and Dulip Samaraweera. In the group-stage matches, Australia will compete against Bangladesh, the United States, and Sri Lanka. On January 27, 2023, the semifinal will take place, and on January 29, 2023, the summit match will take place.
Australia Squad for Women’s U-19 World Cup: Chloe Ainsworth, Jade Allen, Charis Bekker, Paris Bowdler, Maggie Clark, Sianna Ginger, Lucy Hamilton, Ella Hayward, Milly Illingworth, Eleanor Larosa, Rhys McKenna, Claire Moore, Kate Pelle, Amy Smith, Ella Wilson.
