Under-14 Tournament: After scoring an unprecedented 508 runs for Saraswati Vidyalaya in the Mumbai Indians’ Junior Inter-School (Under-14) cricket tournament, 13-year-old Yash Chawde cemented his place in history. In all forms and age categories, his outstanding effort against the Siddheshwar Vidyalaya at the Jhulelal Institute of Technology venue in Nagpur made him just the tenth player to surpass the 500-run mark.
In his 178 balls at the crease, Chawde, who started the batting for his team, showed no mercy to the opposing bowlers, slamming 81 boundaries and 18 maximums. He was still unbeaten at 508 when he and fellow opener Tilak Wakode put together a record-setting 714-run partnership for the first wicket in just 40 overs.
The 13-year-old cricket player, who was enjoying himself on the ice and excelling in regional and national competitions, made the transition to cricket three years ago due to the uncertainty surrounding his skating career. Chirath Selleperuma of Sri Lanka is the only other cricketer to reach the special milestone in the game’s shorter version, making him just the second player to do it in the limited-overs format.
He is a lambey race ka ghoda: Ravi Kulkarni
The director of Saraswati Vidyalaya, Ravi Kulkarni, used the example of Faiz Faizal, a well-known first-class cricketer who also competed for Saraswati Vidyalaya, to argue that Chawde has the ability to succeed at the highest level as Faizal did. He said the child is a very disciplined cricketer who enjoys taking his time at the crease. He will be a player to keep an eye on in the future.
“As one of the top batters in First Class cricket, Faiz later went on to play for India. Yash is capable of accomplishing what Faiz has. He plays cricket well and is disciplined. He stands out on the field because of his body language. He appears to be ‘lambey race ka ghoda’ when he bats,” told TOI Ravi Kulkarni.
