Women’s Asia Cup 2022: At the tenth match of the current Women’s Asia Cup in Sylhet, the Thailand Women’s team made history by defeating the Pakistan Women’s squad for the first time ever. It was also their first triumph in any format over a country that played Test cricket.
When Pakistan won the toss, they decided to bat first. The team’s innings were anchored throughout by opener Sidra Ameen (56 off 64 balls), who helped them reach a modest total of 116/5 in 20 overs. No other batters offered any assistance to Ameen. Additionally, captain Bismah Maroof (3)’s at-bat performance was lacking. Thailand chose Sornnarin Tippoch (2/20) as its preferred bowler.
In response, Natthakan Chantham of Thailand scored a match-winning half-century (61 off 51 balls) to set up her team’s historic victory. With minimal assistance from other batters, Thailand successfully surpassed the goal in 19.5 overs and prevailed by a margin of four wickets. Before the opponents edged Pakistan out in the last over, Nida Dar (2/26) and Tuba Hassan (2/18) bowled superbly to keep Pakistan in the match.
Natthakan Chantham said, “I was simply hoping to enjoy the game.”
Player of the Match Natthakan Chantham discussed her game-changing hit during the post-match trophy ceremony. The right-handed batter admitted that she just wanted to have fun and play by the rules.
“I just wanted to have fun playing, use a straight bat, and get the win. Everything else merely happened along the road; I had only come to appreciate the game. The spinners in the game had me work hard, but I enjoyed it and completed the task.”
Thailand moved up to fifth place in the Women’s Asia Cup 2022 points table after claiming their first victory in the competition. They have so far won one and lost two of their three games. With four points after three games, the Pakistani women’s team is second in the standings.
