Women’s T20 WC: India was eliminated from the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in South Africa after losing to Australia in the first semi-final. On Thursday, February 22, the Ladies in Blue suffered a heartbreaking setback in the high-voltage contest at the Newlands Cricket Stadium.
Jay Shah, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), praised Harmanpreet and his teammates for their effort in the semi-final match. He stated that the country could not be more proud of its performance on the field.
Jay Shah took to Twitter on Thursday and wrote, “It was a painful loss for @BCCIWomen vs Australia in the #ICCWomensT20WorldCup, but we couldn’t be more proud of our girls for their determination on the field. The team gave it their all and proved to be true warriors. Ladies in Blue, we are with you! #INDWvsAUSW.”
Both Kaur and India were inches short of the finish line.
Earlier in Thursday’s semi-final, India fell 5 runs short of the mark after a steady partnership between Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur came apart due to a succession of unfortunate dismissals.
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first, scoring 172/4 in 20 overs. Strong knocks from Australian starter Beth Mooney and skipper Meg Lanning helped their team post a respectable total. Mooney hit 54 off 37 balls, including seven fours and a six. Lanning, on the other hand, batted undefeated for 49 runs off 34 balls, hitting four fours and two sixes. Shikha Pandey collected two wickets for India, while Deepti Sharma and Radha Yadav each took one.
India played aggressively in response to a 173-run goal, despite losing three quick wickets, all during the power play. India got off to a terrible start when openers Shafali Verma (9) and Smriti Mandhana (2) were out early in the session. However, Jemimah Rodrigues and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur kept the scoreboard ticking with a polished brand of cricket, ensuring that they did not lose wickets while keeping the race down. Harmanpreet’s unfortunate run-out after a mistimed uppercut from Rodrigues ended India’s hopes of reaching the final, as they could only muster 167/8 in 20 overs.
While India’s hunt for a world cup trophy continues, Australia advances to its sixth consecutive final. The Lanning-led team will meet either England or South Africa in the summit battle on Sunday, February 26 at Newlands.
