WTC 2023 Final: Just two runs separated Jadeja from a half-century after a magnificent delivery from Nathan Lyon put an end to his abrasiveness.
After a meek surrender by the Indian top-order in the second innings, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian squad lost even more ground to Australia in the World Test Championship Final. The squad was in trouble at 71/4 when Virat Kohli left until great Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja made a valiant comeback against the Australian bowling.
To reach Australia’s enormous score, the Indian squad required a strong opening partnership between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma. Despite a promising beginning, Rohit was caught in front of the wicket after missing a flick and falling to his opposite number. Gill left the game in the next over as well after the young player’s fatally mistimed departure.
After the tea break, Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli both took a wicket, giving the Australians complete control of the game. Ravindra Jadeja threw a wrench in Australia’s preparations just as they had their heads held high and were expecting an early end to the Indian innings. Together with veteran middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane, the famous Indian all-rounder stitched a crucial partnership for the fifth wicket.
On the stab of Stumps, Nathan Lyon struck out Jadeja.
Jadeja did not spare any loose deliveries from the Australian bowlers, particularly the pacers, while Rahane was methodical in his approach. During his quick knock, he did play some lucky breaks as a few edges got by the fielders in the slip cordon. He was only two runs short of a well-earned fifty, though, as experienced Australian bowler Nathan Lyon put a stop to his agitation at the crease.
A beautiful delivery from Lyon utterly destroyed Jadeja, breaking the 71-run stand and halting India’s comeback only fifteen minutes before Stumps. The southpaw spent 51 balls at the bat and hit seven boundaries and a massive six.
