WTC Final: Australia managed to qualify for the World Test Championship (WTC) finals, which are set to begin on June 7 at The Oval in England, after winning the third Test of the recently concluded Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Notably, the visiting team underwent numerous changes throughout the four-match Test series against India because players like David Warner, Mitchell Swepson, and Pat Cummins weren’t available for the entire tour.
Warner’s recent struggles in Test cricket, aside from his magnificent double century against South Africa in the Christmas Day Test last year, cannot be ignored. Warner’s form is currently being scrutinised. Ricky Ponting and other former Australia cricketers want the selectors to consider players outside the opener.
As a result, Warner’s participation in the next WTC final and the Ashes is not yet assured, and former Australian captain Mark Taylor anticipates that the team management will have to make some difficult decisions prior to Australia’s tour for the WTC Final. Even though he didn’t mention a specific cricketer, the rumours have already started.
I genuinely believe that the Test Championship is a blessing for Australia. Taylor told The Herald and The Age, “Making the final and being the top qualifier is a tremendous achievement, but it’s another Test match in England.”
“So, playing at The Oval, a Tests venue clearly, and against a top Indian side in English conditions, it’s not only a chance to win the World Test Championship but also a very fine practise match for the Ashes series.”
“I believe that will be perfect for Australia. There will be some difficult decisions,” the 58-year-old said.
Importantly, Taylor pushed Cricket Australia to make a decision over Warner’s future in Test cricket after expressing his displeasure with the southpaw’s performance in the first Test of the series against India. But, he emphasised that changes frequently occur after the Ashes visit, so he is unsure of what the selectors would decide to do before the eagerly anticipated England tour.
