Darts News: On Sunday, Peter Wright extended his incredible start to 2022 by winning the Players Championship 2 in Barnsley, defeating Gerwyn Price in the final.
The two-time World Champion opened his ProTour title account for the year with an 8-5 victory over Price, only three days after winning the Premier League’s opening night.
Wright, who also advanced to the semi-finals of the Players Championship 1 on Saturday, maintained his excellent form to win his 43rd PDC championship. If Price hadn’t advanced through the quarter-finals, Wright would have moved into the world No. 1 ranking for the first time.
“I’m very happy to get the win today, especially against a player of the class of Gezzy,” Wright said. “I wasn’t thinking of becoming world No 1 until at least March but if I knuckle down and win tournaments I might get there sooner.
“Yesterday I felt great and thought I was going to win. Today my darts were going in at strange angles so I swapped to my old ones, so I don’t know which darts I’m going to use on Thursday night!”
Wright started the day with a 6-5 victory over Alan Soutar, followed by wins over Lewy Williams and Eddie Lovely. After a 6-4 triumph over Rob Cross and a 104.58 average in a 7-3 semi-final victory over Damon Heta, Wright averaged 101.36 in a win over Lee Evans.
Price took the lead at 3-1 and 5-4 in a thrilling final between the world’s top two, only for Wright to come back and take the lead at 6-5. Wright took a 7-5 lead with a 121 checkout on the bullseye, then sealed the victory with a 14-dart leg.
In other matches, Ian White hit a nine-dart leg in a 6-3 loss to Mensur Suljovic in round one, while Michael van Gerwen’s poor run continued when he lost to Stephen Burton in the third round.
Luke Humphries won his first senior ranking title with an 8-4 victory over Ryan Searle in the Players Championship 1 final in Barnsley on Saturday. The 2022 PDC ProTour season resumes on February 12-13 at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan with Players Championships 3 and 4.
When will Wright’s next appearance be?
On Thursday at the M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool, the Cazoo Premier League season continues with Wright taking on Van Gerwen and Price taking on Gary Anderson. Jonny Clayton, the defending champion, will face Michael Smith, while James Wade will face Joe Cullen.
This season, the Premier League is adopting a radically new format, with each night featuring a mini-tournament consisting of quarter-finals, semi-finals, and a final. Last week in Cardiff, Wright overcame Clayton in the final on night one.
