Darts News: Michael Smith, World Championship runner-up, gives us the tale behind his walk-on song in the seventh instalment of our series.
With the Premier League’s return to Cardiff last week, ‘Bully Boy’ is one individual who is overjoyed to be back in the competition.
Michael Smith has competed in four editions of the competition, finishing runner-up in 2018, and while he has yet to win, he remembers hitting a nine-darter in Dublin in 2020.
The 31-year-old was left out of last year’s tournament but used it as an incentive to have a solid year on the tour, reaching the quarter-finals of the World Matchplay, the semi-finals of the Grand Slam of Darts, and the final of the World Championship despite not winning a televised championship.
Few would be surprised if Smith finally broke his television silence in 2022, and the Premier League provides an excellent platform to do so.
The walk-on is a key aspect of the event, and in this series, we speak with the players to learn more about their entrances to the stage, which kick off the party in venues all over the world.
Smith’s walk-on is a fan favourite, as he goes to the stage to the tune of Walk the Moon’s Shut Up and Dances, but when we met up with Bully Boy at the 2019 Grand Slam of Darts, he revealed that he had originally wanted for different music.
He said: “I actually wanted Robin S, Show Me Love but we put that one and Shut Up and Dance on Twitter on a poll and that one came back with the highest percentage, so we went with that one!”
In the video, the former World Youth Champion discusses his most embarrassing walk-on, why Ian White’s walk-on causes him to waver on stage, and what songs he considered altering his walk-on to.
“My walk-on has kind of stuck now. I thought about Robin S, Show Me Love and I was thinking of Dance Monkey, which was my favourite tune at one time.
