Liverpool won 1-2 in a Premier League fixture yesterday thanks to goalkeeper Alisson Becker. This was not because of some goalkeeping feat but because Alisson scored an injury-time goal against West Brom.
West Brom actually had the initial lead because of Hal Robson-Kanu’s 15th-minute goal.
But Mohamed Salah equalized for Liverpool at 33 minutes. It seemed that the match would end in a 1-1 draw until deep into death time.
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson scored an injury-time goal against West Brom. At 90+5 minutes, the Brazilian went up for a corner and sent a brilliant header into the top corner.
And just like that, Liverpool won the match at the very last minute.
Klopp’s Words
Alisson’s winning goal stunned Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, calling the goal a “worldie”, that is, a world-class goal.
“Wow, is a pretty good word. It was spectacular and a good game,” Klopp told BBC Sport. “What a moment! That is so far the highlight. I hope we have time for another highlight [this season]. It was a tricky game. Winning that way is really special. I couldn’t be happier in the moment.
“It’s the best goal I’ve ever seen scored by a goalkeeper! Strikers score like that,” he elaborated. “If Olivier Giroud scores like that you say it’s a worldie. It’s a worldie! Wow!”
He added: “[Alisson’s] our player, our boy and our brother. When he is suffering we are all suffering. It’s hard in these moments. There are more important things than football but when football can deliver moments like this for him, and all the boys, and our fans, then football is the best thing for a few seconds than anything else out there.”
He also said, to Sky Sports: “It’s an unbelievable header, I’ve never seen anything like that, good technique. I wasn’t sure what I was seeing.”
McCoist’s Words
According to Rangers legend Ally McCoist too, Alisson’s stunning last-minute header was as good as any scored by a centre-forward.
Speaking as a talkSPORT host, the former Scotland striker said, “It was genuinely a centre-forward’s header, and I mean an old fashioned one, like somebody getting above a defender and directing it towards goal.
“It was a tremendous goal, it really was.”
“Klopp said insane technique, that’s about right,” he said. “It was slightly behind him and I think Klopp is 100 per cent calling it insane technique, but I don’t think he really did it justice.”
“He said it was glanced, and it did to a certain degree, but it was glanced with power as well into the far corner,” he said, in further praise of Alisson than his own boss.
