Andrés Iniesta says goodbye to Vissel Kobe after five years. The 39-year-old Spaniard closes the door behind him on July 1 at the Japanese club.
Emotional Iniesta leaves Vissel Kobe, but isn’t done yet
Iniesta assured not to be ready yet. “I really want to keep playing,” he explained at the press conference following his departure. “Sometimes the paths diverge and in this case the coach’s priorities are different.”
In tears, the legendary former player of Barcelona said that the decision not to continue at Vissel Kobe was made in mutual consultation. “Given my sporting situation and the desire I have to keep playing, we decided together that it was best to find a way out. At the end of the season we will see what options are available,” he concluded.
The experienced midfielder only made three short appearances in the J-League this season. He still had a contract until January 31, 2024, but that will be terminated early.
Alba honoured by (former) teammates: “Best left back in our history”
Jordi Alba received some nice praise via social media after he announced he was leaving Barcelona. Lionel Messi, among others, made themselves heard.
“You were more than a teammate, a true accomplice on the pitch,” Messi wrote on Instagram. “You know that I always wish you the best for you and also for your family. I hope your new phase continues to bring you much success and joy. Thank you for everything, Jordan. A big hug.”
The two illustrious teammates who preceded Alba with their farewell from Camp Nou, Gerard Piqué and Sergio Busquets, also seized the moment to honour Alba.
“I feel very lucky to have been able to play with you all these years at the club we dreamed of,” said Busquets. “At Barcelona we will miss you very much, the best left back in our history is leaving and above all the great teammate and friend you are and everything we have been able to experience together, both on and off the pitch.”
“It was a huge pleasure to share a dressing room with you. What a show you’ve put on on the left wing all these years. I wish you all the best in the future,” Piqué wrote.
