Antoine Griezmann was one of the finest forwards in Spain and all of Europe prior to his move to Barcelona. Things were far from ideal since he made the move to the Camp Nou. In hopes of regaining his form, the Frenchman was loaned back to Atleti in 2021. The 2018 FIFA World Cup Bronze Ball winner has just scored thrice in this loan spell.
Diego Simeone has refused to start Antoine Griezmann as it would trigger the obligation to buy-clause. In this situation, Atleti’s fourth-highest all-time top goalscorer has spoken to ESPN.
“Personally, I’ve been a bit pissed and annoyed,” Griezmann said. “I’m not scoring and I know the team — and everyone — need my goals. It’s something that can’t happen. So I’m trying to change that.”
“We’ve got a lot to play for. We’re playing [to be in] the Champions League. We’re playing for a magnificent club like Atleti, for our fans, for our families. I don’t think we need to look for any more things to motivate us. We just need to win the next game and qualify for the Champions League.
“I felt good until my injury. After that, it was hard for me to come back. I’m trying to help the team as much as I can. I feel good in general but what I’m missing is goals.
“They’re a necessity for the team, and I need them too. That’s the only thing I’m missing, but it’s something that’s important in terms of our results, so I’ll keep working to improve.”
