Arsenal has reported that forward Gabriel Martinelli will miss the rest of the season following surgery with a knee injury.
Martinelli has hit 10 goals this season from just 15 starts across all Arsenal competitions, proving to be a rare bright spark in a campaign that has offered very little so far.
The 19-year-old had enjoyed an impressive first season in England having joined Ituano’s Gunners who are plying their trade in Brazilian football’s lower leagues
However, it was revealed on Tuesday that Martinelli had been ruled out of Thursday’s Premier League win at Southampton by a training ground injury. Now, the club has said he is facing a lengthy time on the bench.
They described Martinelli’s injury as part of their team news update as: “Left Knee. On 21 June, sustained injury during training. The effective arthroscopic operation to patch a lesion in left-knee cartilage. Will not be available for the remaining 2019/20 matches scheduled at this time.”
Elsewhere, Cedric Soares, having recovered from a facial injury, may make his Arsenal debut. The 29-year-old, despite not having played for Arsenal after making the initial switch in January, made his loan move from Southampton permanent on Tuesday.
Nonetheless, a lack of game-time means it is more likely that in next week’s Premier League battle with bottom team Norwich, Portugal international will make its bow.
And although Martinelli will miss the quarter-final FA Cup in Sheffield United on Sunday, his fellow Brazilian David Luiz is eligible for selection.
He is ready, despite serving a two-match suspension on his red card in Manchester City’s loss and having signed a new one-year contract at the club since.
