Arsenal’s signing of Jorginho has stirred quite a controversy. The Italian midfielder has been taken over from Chelsea and signs a contract with the fellow townsman until mid-2024.
Arsenal had set its sights on Moisés Caicedo in the search for midfield reinforcement, but negotiations with Brighton & Hove Albion failed to reach an agreement, with the London club looking at other options.
Arsenal did have success with 31-year-old Jorginho. The Italian midfielder, who had a contract with Chelsea until next summer, makes the spicy switch to The Gunners for around 11.3 million euros plus 2.3 million euros in possible bonuses.
For Jorginho, Arsenal will be his fourth club. The Italy international played for Hellas Verona and Napoli before joining Chelsea. With his move to Arsenal, he follows in the footsteps of players such as David Luiz, Willian and Petr Cech.
The fact that Jorginho will be Arsenal’s Deadline Day acquisition cannot count on the approval of many fans. On social media, the approaching arrival of the Chelsea midfielder leads to criticism of technical director Edu.
#EduOut
On Twitter, the hashtag #EduOut is currently trending in England. Although Arsenal are currently top of the Premier League thanks to the signing of the Brazilian td, fans point out that their club has not been particularly successful in the transfer market this winter. For example, Arsenal let themselves be trumped by Chelsea in the battle for Mykhailo Mudryk and Leandro Trossard replaced it.
The fact that Arsenal now pays about twelve million euros for a 31-year-old midfielder from Chelsea is the last straw for the necessary fans. According to reports, manager Mikel Arteta is also very fond of Jorginho, but it is Edu who has to pay for it. That was also the case last summer, when Arsenal grabbed next to Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz on Deadline Day.
Without the Brazilian, Arteta forged a team that is currently on course for its first Premier League title since 2004. Jorginho must now help bring the league title to the Emirates Stadium. Arsenal fans have bad memories of players coming over from Chelsea. David Luiz and Willian also made the switch in recent years, but were not exactly successful at Arsenal.
