Mikel Arteta admits that he is uncertain whether David Luiz will be playing again for Arsenal.
“I don’t know,” Arsenal’s head coach said when asked if Luiz will be playing again for the club.
However, he still has complete belief in the defender currently under fire. Losing such an experienced defender would be a blow to Arteta and he confesses that he is still unsure what will be the outcome of the ongoing contract talks.
Arteta needs the 33-year-old to remain and Luiz has already confirmed his commitment to stay at the club, however the financial instability created by the coronavirus pandemic ensures that the team leaders hesitate to give him a new contract:
“We can’t forget the financial situation. The way that Covid-19 has hit every club and the economy at large will have an effect.
“What the club is currently doing is analysing the situation and trying to clarify many of the uncertainties we will have in the future. We have to make major decisions so it’s hard to match them in with our desires on time.
“We need to adapt. It is just what it is. This is why, yesterday, I wanted to protect David. This is why I didn’t start him. But it’s a funny game and you need him after 20 minutes, a player who’s had a lot of uncertainty in the last few weeks.”
