In his attempts to assist Barcelona in getting out of debt and advancing in sports, Barça chairman Joan Laporta is confident that he has chosen the proper course of action. The chairman claimed that he had just two options for the summer, one of which was in his opinion quite unattractive.
Due to its crippling debt, Barcelona has been forced to take unusual steps. To make any moves in the transfer market, the Spanish team sold 49% of the shares in Barça Studios. And forfeited a quarter of the broadcast rights for the following 25 years. As a result, players like Jules Koundé, Raphinha, and Robert Lewandowski could be purchased.
Barcelona’s actions have drawn criticism, and Nasser Al-Khelafi, the PSG chairman, claims they can’t possibly be legal. Barça chairman Joan Laporta brushes it aside and affirms his support for the choices he has taken.
At a supporters’ gathering, Laporta remarked, “Unfortunately, because of the legacy of the past, we had only two choices: either sell some assets of the club, or beg people for money. Me and my colleagues did not want to perform the latter during a time of a pandemic and economic hardships. So, in order to make a profit, we had to sell.”
The chairman assured everyone that they could rest easy. “Because we sold at a very excellent price during a period of extreme difficulty. And all of this without seriously hurting the income statement for the following years.”
