The Conference League final was temporarily halted on Wednesday evening when Cristiano Biraghi was pelted with cups of beer and an electronic cigarette by West Ham United fans. The captain of Fiorentina did not want to say too much about it afterwards.
Fiorentina captain suffers bleeding head wound after thrown object
Cristiano Biraghi suffered a serious head injury during the Conference League final after the Fiorentina captain was hit by an object thrown from the crowd. Biraghi was bleeding profusely and was fitted with a turban.
During the match between Fiorentina and West Ham United, glasses and other items are thrown onto the pitch all the time. When Biraghi wanted to take a corner, it was no different. The left back was hit on the head, which resulted in a major bleeding wound. Biraghi responded with a cynical round of applause towards the West Ham supporters.
The game was of course stopped to treat Biraghi, but not stopped. After a few minutes’ delay, Carlos del Cerro Grande continued the game.
Pelted Biraghi: “I hope someone does their job”
“I don’t feel it is necessary to say anything,” Biraghi told Sky Sport Italia. “I’m not judging them, but I hope someone does their job and deals with them.” West Ham already made a fierce statement.
For Fiorentina, after the Coppa Italia, it was the second final in a short time that was lost 2-1. “It hurts a lot,” said Biraghi. “It is very difficult to find words to describe the terrible feeling we have in us right now. We are dead inside, especially as we are the protagonists on the pitch, but we carry with us a whole city that has shown in the last two or three weeks how important Fiorentina is to them.”
“What hurts even more is that West Ham were not exactly overwhelming, but we will analyze the game later,” said 30-year-old Biraghi. Italian legend Beppe Bergomi also did not like West Ham’s style. “This is not a team that plays real football,” he said in the Sky Sport studio. “West Ham play like a team from the 1970s. A downright embarrassing style.”
