Champions League Football News – Chelsea Obliterated Juventus
The First Half
The Blues dominated the opening half against a Bianconeri team who were seemingly looking for just a point, not three.
And true to this, Chelsea exploded into life midway through the half after they couldn’t create chances despite controlling possession.
Reece James tried to catch Wojciech Szczesny off guard with a whipped free-kick to the near post. But Wojciech Szczesny made a fine save for his effort.
However, from the resultant corner, Trevoh Chalobah successfully sent a loose ball on a half-volley into the top corner.
And this goal remained valid even after a VAR review. They cleared it despite a push on Leonardo Bonucci and a handball by Antonio Rudiger.
Three minutes later, Juventus were almost level, but Thiago Silva’s spectacular goal-line clearance denied Alvaro Morata. The latter had hoisted the ball over the onrushing Edouard Mendy but it was in vain.
Then, just before the interval, James put Szczesny to the test again. He chested the ball down and unleashing a stinging shot but the Polish goalkeeper tipped the ball around the post.
The Second Half
Chelsea extended their lead to 2-0 only ten minutes after the break.
James controlled a cleared ball with his chest before smashing home a shot. And this shot was nearly identical to the one that Szczesny had saved just before half-time.
Then, after a mere three minutes, Chelsea were ahead by 3-0. Ruben Loftus-Cheek was the architect of this third goal, threading his way expertly through the Juventus defence. He then lay the ball on a plate for Callum Hudson-Odoi, who side-footed home in acres of space with joy.
Later in the game, both sides had late chances, with Edourd Mendy having to make his first major save. He was tipping Weston McKennie’s shot over.
On the other end, Szczesny was doing well in redirecting Hakim Ziyech’s low effort over the post.
But it was Chelsea who scored the game’s final goal in stoppage time as they led by a fabulous 4-0.
James was involved once more in this final play, as he delivered a crazy cross-field pass to Ziyech. And the latter sent a superb low ball across the box for Timo Werner to tap in the fourth goal.
