Dortmund 5-2 Borussia Monchengladbach: Thanks to a home win over Borussia Mönchengladbach, Borussia Dortmund keeps an eye on leader Bayern Munich. Donyell Malen and Sébastien Haller were worth gold for the number two in the Bundesliga.
Dortmund keeps title fight
Dortmund saw Bayern Munich convincingly beat Schalke 04 earlier in the day and BVB also hoped to record a big victory. Malen helped the home team take the lead after just four minutes. After a shot from Haller was cracked, Malen was in the right place to head in the opening goal. It was already his ninth league goal in this calendar year for the Orange-international.
Dortmund then decided the game before half an hour. After Haller was worked to the ground in the penalty area, Jude Bellingham was allowed to moor from eleven meters after eighteen minutes. The England international did not fail: 2-0. Two minutes later, Malen was the declarant with a wonderful goal from Haller. The former Eredivisie top scorer worked the ball with a subtle heel ball past Mönchengladbach keeper Jan Olschowsky.
Malen-Haller on fire
The Malen-Haller tandem yielded another goal for Dortmund after half an hour: a new cross from the Dutchman was tapped in at the near post by Haller. Malen was also close to his second goal of the game before the break, but this time Olschowsky got in the way of the striker. In the second half, Dortmund switched back a notch with a big lead.
After more than an hour, Malen went to shore. His replacement Giovanni Reyna was not a lucky substitute: he quickly caused a penalty kick by fouling Ramy Bensebaini. The Algerian himself hit from eleven meters. The nonchalant Dortmund then became sloppy in the final phase and also collected the 4-2 via substitute Lars Stindl. Dortmund goalkeeper Gregor Kobel prevented a second goal from Stindl shortly before the end with a feline reaction. Reyna made up for his earlier mistake by making it 5-2 in extra time.
Thanks to the victory, Dortmund is again one point behind leader Bayern. With two rounds to go, Borussia Dortmund is in second place in the table while Borussia Mönchengladbach occupies eleventh place. On Sunday, May 21, Borussia Dortmund will play against Augsburg.
