Unai Emery’s big plans for Aston Villa. Since the appointment of 51-year-old Bask, The Villans have been making an impressive advance in the Premier League. Only Manchester City collected more points in 2023. However, Emery wants more.
Outspoken Emery shares his grand plans with Aston Villa
When Emery took over from Steven Gerrard on November 1, Villa were 17th and relegation was a very serious threat. Thanks to an unprecedented advance, the club can now even dream of Champions League football. “We’re in the top six now, but to stay there, with teams like Liverpool, Brighton and Tottenham around you, that’s the hardest part,” Emery said in an extensive interview with AS.
The Spanish daily newspaper asks him about his ambitions. Does Emery dare to dream of a Champions League ticket? “The goal I have set for myself is twofold: to try and win a trophy and bring Aston Villa back to Europe. We were eliminated in both cups, partly because our priority was our position in the Premier League. But winning prizes is in my head,” Emery assures.
“Our revival in competition offers us the opportunity to accelerate some processes. I remain cautious: we are doing very well, but the most difficult part of the season is still ahead. Above all, we hope that in three years’ time there will still be the same enthusiasm and ambition as there is now,” said Emery.
“A top seven has emerged”
The Bask says he enjoys the Premier League. “This competition is getting stronger and stronger. When I was at Arsenal everyone was talking about the top six. We know which clubs are involved. Now a top seven has emerged with Newcastle United. We want to become the eighth club in that group and create a top eight,” says Emery.
Emery made very clear about his ambitions with the club, “We escaped the relegation zone and are now in the top ten. The European sites are the next step. We are now playing a number of key matches to achieve something very important: our new goal is to reach European football. That could be the Champions League, the Europa League or the Conference League.”
