From being Europa League finalists last season to losing five consecutive Champions League fixtures. Rangers FC is having a terrible Champions League season, statistically speaking. Giovanni van Bronckhorst, the manager, sees adequate leads despite the team’s dismal record.
Rangers lost to Napoli 3-0 on Wednesday and only appears to have a remote chance of spending the winter in Europe. Only if the top Scottish club defeats Ajax at home the next week with a goal differential of at least five will there be a Europa League follow-up. Van Bronckhorst maintained his composure by saying, “A loss is a loss, but our game provides perspective.”
“We competed against Italy’s top players. They have played a pretty excellent game and are currently floating. The two goals in the opening period were too simple, but we have produced the most chances in a Champions League game this year. That’s good news. You need to consider the league you are playing in. The level we are at currently is a major step for us,” the Rangers boss stated.
Europa League finalists last season to worst ever group stage record in the UCL
Rangers must take care not to go down in Champions League history as the worst team, in the meanwhile. The Gers are one goal away from having the lowest season ever with zero points and a goal differential of -18. That occurred during the 2011–12 campaign under the name of Dinamo Zagreb (zero points, goal difference -19). Viktoria Plzen will be Rangers’ ‘competition,’ though. The Czech team is similarly without a point, has a goal differential of -17, and has yet to play Barcelona.
