Amazing free kick from star Gündogan guides City past Everton
Everton surprised friend and foe on Monday by beating Brighton 1-5 on the English south coast. That instilled confidence in the blue part of Liverpool, but City turned out to be on a different level. The Premier League leader walked away from Everton in the final phase of the first half. That was thanks to Ilkay Gündogan, who scored the opening goal on a pass from Riyad Mahrez and then enabled Erling Haaland to double the score (0-2, see images below this article).
Five minutes before the break, the Germany international brought the highlight of the game by curling a free kick unstoppably behind Jordan Pickford into the top left corner (0-3). With that, Everton’s resistance was finally broken, although James Tarwowski still headed on the crossbar. With a view to the return against Real, that gave City the opportunity to slow down and save energy for Wednesday, when the Spanish top club visits the Etihad Stadium.
Everton must hope for Liverpool win
In their own country, City is heading for the national title. With three games to go, the lead over pursuers Arsenal is four points. Everton remained above the red line despite the defeat. The Toffees must be salient enough to hope for success from Liverpool. The arch rival comes into action on Monday against Leicester City, which will pass Everton in a win. The Red would be more than happy to do their rivals a favour as they are in an uphill battle to reach the Champions League.
In their last five games, Everton have won one win, drawn twice and lost twice, while Manchester City have five wins. Everton have 32 points and are in seventeenth place, while Manchester City are in first place with 85 points. Manchester City has played 1 game less than Everton.
Everton will play its next game against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The teams will face each other on Saturday, May 20. Manchester City will take on Chelsea at home on Sunday, May 21.
