Arjen Robben is eagerly awaiting his former club Bayern Munich’s upcoming Champions League showdown. Manchester City and Pep Guardiola evoke fond memories in him.
Robben is looking forward to CL clash Man City-Bayern: “’Tuchel can always call me”
Bayern will face Manchester City next week as the next obstacle to the ultimate goal of winning the Champions League. Robben knows what it’s like to win that European Cup and to beat The Citizens. The former international has won six of his seven matches with Manchester City. “Bayern better capture me,” Robben said with a smile on the site of the German club. “Thomas Tuchel can always call me. No, joking aside, I can’t do it anymore.”
The game against Man City brings back fond memories of his own past. “The first encounter that comes to mind is the victory against Bayern in the Champions League at the Etihad Stadium in 2013. That was an absolute top game from our side. In general, the atmosphere in England with the fans is nice. It’s always nice when you play there,” he recalled.
“It is without a doubt a top game that could have been the final”
For Bayern it is also a reunion with Pep Guardiola, who worked in Bavaria with Robben. The Dutchman knows from his own experience where the strength of the Catalan coach lies. “He can build a team well. I have enormous respect for his work. Wherever he works, you can always see his trademark. The three years with him were special to me. I enjoyed it immensely. I’ve had a lot of great coaches, but from a footballing point of view he was one of the best,” the former Dutch forward added.
Robben will sit well on Tuesday. “It is without a doubt a top game that could have been the final. It’s going to be very interesting,” said the former international, who also has his thoughts on the contenders for the last eight. “On one side of the schedule you have three Italian teams, with Napoli standing out. Napoli can really be the surprise. On the other hand, you have two favourites, Bayern and Man City. And Real Madrid is always Real Madrid, which you always have to take into account. They are certainly capable of winning this competition again.”
