France 4-1 Australia: Olivier Giroud was the celebrated man in France on Tuesday. The 36-year-old striker wants more after his productive World Cup start.
Giroud did have some comments in general about the 4-1 win over Australia, such as the rapid deficit and the injury of Lucas Hernández. “But on a personal level I couldn’t have hoped for much more,” said the French striker.
The experienced attacker made a major contribution to the victory over the Socceroos with two goals. In addition, he tied for international goals with Thierry Henry, who is Les Blues ‘ all-time top scorer with 51 goals.
That is an honor for Giroud. “It’s a source of pride. I don’t intend to stop here. I hope to show even more in this competition so that I can help the team reach our goal. We always have to take it game by game.”
Goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris called it a ‘great’ night for Giroud. “Olivier has always been there for the national team. To his credit, he never gives up. He is an example, unfortunately we lost Karim Benzema and we were all very disappointed about that, especially Olivier. We had to move on and we knew we could count on everyone. We can count on Olivier.”
France 4-1 Australia: Lucas Hernández’ injury
Didier Deschamps expects the World Cup to be over for Lucas Hernández. The defender fell against Australia on Tuesday with a knee injury.
The first sounds about Hernández’s injury are not positive. “He still needs to be examined, but it seems quite serious to me,” said Deschamps afterwards. “This was clearly the big black spot of this evening.”
The French are already dealing with the necessary injuries anyway. For example, big names such as Ngolo Kanté, Paul Pogba and Karim Benzema are also missing due to injuries.
“I would like to dedicate this victory to Lucas,” said the man of the evening. “We lost another colleague during this tournament. With that, Giroud was also ahead of things. Our thoughts are all with him.”
