At Monday’s Ballon d’Or event, Robert Lewandowski received the Gerd Müller Trophy as the season’s top scorer after scoring 57 goals in 56 games. He received that prize from the organiser, France Football, the previous year. In particular, Erling Haaland, Lewandowski is cautioning the younger generation of strikers today.
Gerd Müller Trophy ceremony
The Norwegian has scored twenty goals for Manchester City and one for the national team. He has been scoring like crazy. This puts him seven goals ahead of Lewa, who has supported Barcelona fourteen times but hasn’t yet played for Poland’s national side. Lewandowski is not yet concerned. “I could score a lot of goals here, and I could see right away that this team has a lot of promise. I am aware that a new generation is emerging, but I remain,” the former Dortmund man exclaimed.
Lewandowski has been defending Barcelona’s colours this season, but he is responsible for this honour from his time at Bayern Munich last year, which is also the team where the award’s namesake rose to fame. The Polish striker praised him as his forerunner, “I am overjoyed and proud—not just of the victory, but also of the trophy’s moniker. A big source of inspiration was Gerd. The challenge of trying to break his records was always great.”
And shattering the record he did, with 41 goals. He surpassed Müller’s top score of forty in a Bundesliga season from the books. “It was very emotional to score 41 goals in the Bundesliga because I didn’t think it was possible to break that record. Everything I did was for him,” Lewandowski concluded.
It appears as though Lewandowski will challenge for the Ballon d’Or next year as well. After being snubbed for the past three seasons. The striker has struck 14 times in 13 appearances for his new club this season.
