German billionaire Klaus-Michael Kühne comes to Die Rothosen’s aid again. For the sixth year in a row, Hamburger SV has been sentenced to a stay in the 2. Bundesliga. VfB Stuttgart put a heavy-handed end to the promotion dream of the fallen top club on Monday. That blow hits HSV hard.
For the fifth year in a row, HSV’s mission to return to the Bundesliga failed. It was extra painful that the northerners thought they had won the loot on the final day after the victory over Sandhausen. Deep into extra time – HSV’s match had long since ended – Heidenheim still secured second place and thus a ticket for the Bundesliga.
Trainer Tim Walter pointed out that HSV is still under construction. “Some things we could do better, but the foundation is there and we are making progress. We still have the potential and we want to exploit that. We’ve fallen, but we won’t stay down. We get up again. We should not complain, but continue on the path we have taken and try to do better next season,” he said.
Walter does not have to fear for his job despite the setback. Sporting director Jonas Boldt assured that in conversation with Kicker. He added, “Of course we will continue with the trainer, because we have laid a foundation. We got 66 points, but just missed out on promotion.”
German billionaire comes to the rescue of HSV in the hunt for coveted promotion
Hamburg remains determined to achieve promotion. 86-year-old Kühne, one of the richest Germans and born in Hamburg, has decided to pull out the wallet after HSV went down against VfB Stuttgart in the play-offs. The seven-time champion of Germany missed promotion for the fifth time in a row. In the 2017/18 season, HSV descended to the 2. Bundesliga.
With a financial injection of thirty million euros, Kühne, who has often invested money in the club over the years, hopes to have his beloved club return to the highest level after next season. “It would be nice if capital could flow in from several sides. We hope to encourage other parties to follow our example,” said Kühne on the HSV club site.
The total wealth of Kühne, who lives in Switzerland, is estimated at around thirty billion euros. The immensely richer German was for many years a manager at the original family business Kuehne + Nagel International AG, a logistics service provider.
