Joris Gnagnon has failed in his case against Sevilla in front of the FIFA dispute tribunal. When Gnagnon was fired, he still had two more years left on his contract. In 2021, he filed a claim for unfair dismissal. Sevilla have made the decision of FIFA public.
“Former Sevilla FC player Joris Gagnon’s petition for an unfair dismissal was rejected by the FIFA dispute panel. After being let go because of his terrible physical state, the footballer demanded damages of more than 4,600,000 euros. Sevilla FC will not be compelled to pay the player any money as a result of this judgement, and the player may still appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (TAD),” read the Andalusian Club’s statement.
It will be important to determine how far Joris Gnagnon is willing to pursue this matter. Given that he is currently without a team and that his previous one was also released for medical reasons. Gnagnon, whom Sevilla have data and evidence demonstrating how far from his optimal weight (weighing more than 100 kilos) in his time as a Nervionense football player, now has little to cling to. He was unable to assist the club that paid him, draw interest from other clubs, or leave on loan due to his excessive weight. The Nervionenses leaders grew tired of his attitude and chose to fire him. Reasoning that the courts might uphold his position.
