An English Premier League fixture yesterday saw Liverpool win a crucial 3-0 victory over Burnley.
Fifth-placed Liverpool were hoping to win on Wednesday, which they did, and with a better goal difference than Leicester City.
So, Liverpool are now in fourth place and the battle for the European cups continues in earnest.
Burnley, on the other hand, are already assured of promoting next season and played only for the best possible result.
The First Half
The meeting was extremely exciting from the very beginning. Already in the 3rd minute, Liverpool has their first real effort at scoring, but Sadio Mane erred in his finishing.
On the part of the hosts, meanwhile, Chris Wood missed a brilliant chance. He only had Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker to obstruct his strike but his ball went wide a few meters.
Both teams were cutting it close. In the 29th minute, Thiago Alcantara’s strike from the side of the penalty area missed by a meter.
Then Dwight McNeil shot hard and accurately, but Alisson was up to the task.
After several failures on both sides, the Reds managed to finally break through the Burnley defence though.
Andy Robertson pulled the ball back to 11 meters. And Roberto Firmino ran brilliantly into the penalty area and with a flat shot, he gave Liverpool the initial lead.
The Second Half
After the break, Liverpool’s Sadio Mane threw the ball into the penalty area, while Nathaniel Phillips backed up on his rival.
The latter leapt into the air and scored his second goal with a powerful head strike.
But Burnley didn’t give up and continued to threaten their rivals with sporadic attacks.
Indeed, they came extremely close to scoring after a Ben Mee shot. But though the ball had already passed Alisson, heading for the goalpost, Phillips deflected it at the last second.
The hosts’ coach fought for a good result and sent another striker onto the pitch. It worked in a way because Burnley began to play with more vigour.
But it was to little avail as Liverpool effectively made their lead impossible to match.
After playing from a corner kick, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain scored the third goal for The Reds with a flat shot.
