Luis Díaz takes over jersey number 7 from James Milner. With this, the Liverpool striker follows in the footsteps of illustrious predecessors such as Kenny Dalglish, Kevin Keegan, Luis Suárez and Steve McManaman.
Díaz chooses famous shirt number and meets Liverpool fans
Milner wore shirt number 7 for the last eight seasons, but the veteran moved to Brighton & Hove Albion this summer. Díaz saw his chance and decided to play with the number on the back of his shirt. Due to the performance of the above names, there is pressure on his choice. For example, Harry Kewell and Robbie Keane wore the jersey number with less success.
Díaz’s switch also means that a number of Liverpool supporters have had their shirt printed ‘wrongly’ with back number 23. The Colombian personally takes care of that. Díaz offers the victims a new shirt for free. The replaced jerseys are not destroyed, but donated to the LFC Foundation.
Who wants 8 and 9?
Meanwhile, back numbers 8 and 9 are still waiting for a new owner. Until recently, these belonged to Naby Keïta and Roberto Firmino respectively. Newcomer Alexis Mac Allister opted for shirt number 10, which was last worn by current Bayern Munich striker Sadio Mané in the 2021/22 season. Darwin Núñez is seen as the new number 9.
Top transfer in the making for Timber
Liverpool linked, Jurriën Timber is approaching a transfer to Arsenal. The defender of Ajax has reached a personal agreement with The Gunners.
Last week it became clear that Timber is enthusiastic about a move to the vice-champions of the Premier League. Now that he’s also done with Arsenal, it’s up to the clubs.
Arsenal made an initial offer for Timber last week, which was around 35 million euros. That was clearly too little for Ajax. The negotiation game is now in full swing. That this is going in the right direction, as De Telegraaf reported on Sunday evening, is confirmed to VI by sources surrounding the deal.
Ajax will start preparations at the end of this week, but due to his recent international obligations with the Dutch national team, Timber has a longer holiday. It now seems that the defender will not report to Amsterdam after his holiday, but to London.
