Manchester United 2-0 Wolves: Manchester United recorded a very important victory in the race for the English Champions League tickets on Saturday afternoon. Wolverhampton Wanderers were defeated at Old Trafford.
Man United can smell Champions League after liberating victory
Due to the defeats in the matches against Brighton and West Ham United, in which Erik ten Hag’s team also failed to score, Liverpool had come to breathe quite a bit. The once comfortable lead over The Reds had shrunk to one point.
Manchester United could therefore not afford another loss of points at home against Wolves. A big setback was that Marcus Rashford was missing with a leg injury. With that, Ten Hag missed the only player who easily finds the net this season.
Wing attackers Jadon Sancho and Antony had to make up for Rashford’s loss on Saturday. Antony in particular claimed a leading role. The Brazilian missed a number of decent opportunities in the first half hour.
Antony was sharp in the 32nd minute. After good work from Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes, he was able to approach goalkeeper Daniel Bentley and this time he passed with the right to Anthony Martial. It was a breeze for the Frenchman to score his fifth Premier League goal of the season: 1-0.
Second half
In the remainder of the game, United still created opportunities. Deep into extra time it still became 2-0 via Alejandro Garnacho, who did not lose to Weghorst, but rounded off himself after a quick counter.
The liberating victory over Wolves means that United can smell the Champions League. The Red Devils are level with number three Newcastle, which has a significantly better goal difference. More importantly, the lead over Liverpool is growing again to four points, with three league matches to go.
In the last five games, Manchester United have won two, drawn once and lost twice, while Wolverhampton Wanderers have two wins and three losses.
Manchester United are now in fourth place with 66 points, while Wolverhampton Wanderers are in thirteenth position with 40 points. Manchester United have played one game less than Wolverhampton Wanderers.
AFC Bournemouth is the next opponent for Manchester United in the away game. Wolverhampton Wanderers play a home game against Everton at Molineux Stadium. Both games will be played on Saturday, May 20.
