Mexico 0-0 Poland: Mexico and Poland both failed to score on Tuesday. This is especially painful for Robert Lewandowski, who missed a penalty kick. He has been unable to score a World Cup goal, yet.
Mexico and Poland were hoping to do well in Group C on Tuesday, after Argentina had a surprise loss to Saudi Arabia (1-2) earlier in the day. A victory would thus be a significant step towards the knockout stage. The tension did not appear to help Mexico or Poland .
In the first half, not much transpired. Poland did not have a single genuine goal effort before the break, although Mexico did generate some threat through Alexis Vega and Jess Gallardo. There was, however, no scoring. The Mexicans continued to press at the start of the second half, but owing to VAR, Poland had the best chance of scoring first.
Héctor Moreno and Lewandowski fought for the ball after Alvarez lost it. Both players utilised their arms, and Lewandowski collapsed just as he was ready to shoot. Referee Chris Beath thought none of it was wrong, but then was corrected by the VAR, and the ball landed on the spot. Lewandowski reported with assurance. Nevertheless, the forward’s effort was inadequate and was rejected by Guillermo Ochoa.
The disappointment was devastating for Lewandowski, who didn’t receive another chance like this in the rest of the season. The Mexican attackers were also unable to break through on the opposing side, so the second Group C encounter ended 0-0. Saudi Arabia is currently the group’s leader. On Saturday, Poland will face the leader, while Mexico will face Argentina.
Mexico 0-0 Poland: Lewa’s apology
Following that, the Polish journalists demanded a response from Lewandowski, who instead addressed his Instagram fans. “We played well and deserved to win. Accepting this is all the more difficult for me. Please accept my apologies and thank you for your patience. We continue to compete for the next round.”
Czesaw Michniewicz, Poland’s national coach, understandably backed his best player. “There will always be an unsatisfactory feeling if you miss a penalty and draw 0-0 at the World Cup,” he remarked. “However, these things happen. No one can blame Robert. I feel horrible for him, however, his World Cup goal will come. That is something I am certain of.”
