Luka Modric maintains that after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus in 2018, there was never a question in terms of the Real Madrid team’s goals.
“It’s pointless discussing how important Ronaldo was for Real, but I must say we were not burdened by the fact he was no longer there in the sense that we weren’t able to generate the same ambition,” he told.
Also, when Ronaldo had left for Juventus, Luka Modric never doubted Real Madrid’s trophy chances.
Modric maintains that Real Madrid still assumed that after Cristiano Ronaldo left for Juventus, they will get back to winning trophies:
“We were convinced we’d continue to win trophies even without him because, regardless of the strength of the individual, the team is always above everything.”
A short time after winning his fourth Champions League with Los Blancos, the Portugal star left Madrid for Turin in a €112million contract and enjoyed Serie A glory in his first season in Italy.
On the other hand, Madrid went on to win the 2018 Club World Cup but otherwise suffered a frustrating season, with Barcelona taking the championship trophy, Liverpool retaining the Champions League and Valencia capturing the Copa del Rey.
However, with Zinedine Zidane re-installed in March last year as head coach, Los Blancos did emerge triumphant during the interrupted 2019-20 season to win the league title once again.
