Morocco’s Walid Regragui is no longer in the running for the FIFA Coach of the Year award. The national coach of World Cup sensation Morocco must give priority to Carlo Ancelotti, Pep Guardiola and Lionel Scaloni.
Regragui received much praise for the way he led Morocco to fourth place in the World Cup in Qatar. That historic achievement is not enough to survive the final selection for The Best FIFA’s Men Coach election. Just like the French national coach Didier Deschamps, Regragui has dropped out.
The battle for the honorary title for Trainer of the Year will be between Ancelotti, Guardiola and Scaloni during the award ceremony on February 27.
Ancelotti owes his nomination to his successes with Real Madrid, who won the Spanish title and the Champions League under the Italian’s care. The convincing way in which Guardiola guided Manchester City to the English title makes him one of the three candidates. Scaloni is one of the last contenders for the FIFA honorary prize thanks to the world title with Argentina.
Sarina Wiegman also has a chance to win the FIFA prize for the best coach in women’s football. The Dutch national coach of England, just like Pia Sundhage and Sonia Bompastor, survived the last selection.
FIFA releases report for the past historic transfer window
In other news, The last transfer window goes down as historic. FIFA counted an unprecedented number of transactions and set another record.
FIFA released a report on the transfers in January. The world football association peated a total of 4,728 transfers in the first month in 2023: ‘record-breaking’. It is more than fourteen percent more than a year ago.
Not only the number, but also the volume took off compared to a year ago. This year, 1.4 billion euros were transferred in the first transfer window of 2023. It is an increase of almost fifty percent compared to last January and sets a new record. The old record from 2018 was broken by 210 million.
The lion’s share comes from English clubs, who spent 832 million euros on transfers. That is 57 percent of what was spent in all countries in January 2023.
