It was a surprisingly difficult game that Napoli and SPAL recently played. But, after their Coppa Italia triumph and a 2-0 win over to Hellas Verona, the Partenopei were brimming with confidence.
With this game, the survival hopes of SPAL have been all but wiped out by Cagliari’s last-gasp defeat, especially injured by Etrit Berisha, Ervin Zukanovic and Federico Di Francesco.
On the Napoli side, Diego Demme has been resting this week since becoming a father and Dries Mertens has returned to starting XI.
It was a strange game for Andrea Petagna as well, who already signed in January for Napoli.
It just took four minutes for Mertens to break through. He skipped the ball through Fabian Ruiz’s offside trap and dinked it delicately over the on-rushing Karol Letica. It was initially flagged offside but VAR later showed that he had perfectly timed the sprint.
Dries Mertens, Jose Callejon and Amin Younes made beating SPAL easier for Napoli, by scoring a goal each.
Napoli – SPAL (3:1):
Goals: 1-0 Mertens 4′, 1-1 Petagna 29′, 2-1 Callejon 36′, 3-1 Younes 78′
