As a recently promoted club, Werder Bremen is having a fantastic year along with striker Niclas Füllkrug. On Friday, the Ole Werner-coached club defeated 1899 Hoffenheim, a close rival. With top scorer Niclas Füllkrug also scoring in Sinsheim.
Werder Bremen finished runners up in the 2nd tier of German football last season. This season, they have got off to a flying start as they sit 4th in the league.
On friday they stole all three points in a 2-1 win against Hoffenheim. Thanks to the opener from Ducksch and the late penalty from Füllkrug. With the strike from the penalty spot he now goes on top of the Bundesliga scorers list for the season.
The story of Füllkrug is special. The striker went through Werder Bremen’s youth academy, but never broke through. He showed himself at the second level at 1. FC Nürnberg and Hannover 96, after which he scored fourteen times in the Bundesliga in the 2017/18 season with Hannover. Werder brought him back in 2019. He could not prevent relegation in 2021, but with nineteen goals he did have an important part in last season’s promotion.
So far, Hoffenheim and Werder are doing very well at the highest level. The 29-year-old attacker first provided his second assist of the season against Hoffenheim by serving Marvin Ducksch at the 0-1. After Munas Dabbur’s equalizer, Füllkrug let his team escape in the final phase when the ball hit the spot. The striker scored his eighth goal of the season from eleven meters.
With those eight goals, Füllkrug is the Bundesliga’s top scorer so far. There is even cautious talk of a place in Germany’s World Cup selection. Werder, meanwhile, came on fifteen points, as many as Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. The two top clubs will face each other on Saturday in Signal Iduna Park.
