At the conclusion of this year, Ola Toivonen will call it a career. The Malmö FF attacking midfielder, 36, believes it will be wonderful after his contract with the club finishes at the end of December.
Toivonen justifies his choice by saying, “I feel that the moment is here.” I’m still motivated, but my body is no longer up to the task. According to the former PSV captain, he missed time from May 2021 to January 2022 due to a significant knee injury.
After that, Toivonen says, “I fought back, and my return went better than expected. I had hoped that everything would run smoothly until the fall, but the team and I are both disappointed in the outcomes and the number of minutes I play.”
A month ago, Toivonen notified the team that there would be no need to discuss a contract extension. Not many individuals were aware of my plans to stop. Just my mum, father, and wife, really. It feels fantastic to be able to share it at this time.” Toivonen claims he has always had high expectations for himself. “I don’t give a damn what people think of me; I expect the best of myself.”
“I set high standards for myself every day, and the club has a winning mentality. When I arrived in Malmö (in 2020, ed. ), I mentioned that it would be good to win the title. We have achieved success twice; we have won the cup and are participating in the Europa League group stage. Nothing bothers me,” says Toivonen in conclusion.
Between 2009 and 2014, the Swede participated in 64 international games and played for PSV. He played 199 official games with Eindhoven, scoring 78 goals and dishing out 32 assists. After being fired from Malmö in 2009, Toivonen rejoined the team in June 2020. He is eligible to play in up to four more league games and two Europa League contests throughout the ensuing months.
