Following the Champions League fixture, Owen Wijndal was unable to provide a firm assessment of the severity of his injury. After colliding with a billboard in the first half of the match against Rangers FC, the left fullback was substituted. Later, he revealed to RTL 7 that the damage was to his ankle.
Wijndal used crutches to walk later, but his discomfort had subsided significantly. He remarked, “Of course you are really unhappy to have to leave. I go back since that ball was high. As soon as I head it, another push comes. Then, Wijndal slipped off the ground into the boards. “I landed incorrectly since the field is significantly sloping down. The ankle that previously kept me apart was there once more. He made a double-shot. You quickly feel as though you cannot keep playing after that.”
Owen Wijndal unsure if it was a rupture
“Now it is thick. We applied a lot of ice to it, so I’m hoping the swelling will go down quickly and that I can start playing again soon, “Wijndal said, unable to confirm whether there had been a rupture. “I’m not sure. Tomorrow we’re going to scan, and after that I can tell you more. That would make me feel better because I had to miss a lot of time due to that ankle, which hurt more back then than it does now. The scan must first be completed before we can determine anything.”
“It’s simply sour, but that makes no difference,” Wijndal, who earned his first starting position since the competitive game against FC Groningen on August 14 (6-1 win), stated. “I have to try to be fit as soon as possible and I hope it will be good. Or will there be anything else later? “It depends on how well I play, on myself. Such behaviour is typical at Ajax. Nobody is certain of where to begin. All you have to do is play well.”
Finally, Wijndal was questioned about how challenging it was to compete against Blind for the starting position at Ajax. “Very challenging, as you could see. You must appreciate the coach’s decisions because they are his or her own. I realise that it takes a long time because Blind is an excellent football player and an international. Then I’ll have to seize the opportunity if I get it. I believe things went well, but it’s unfortunate that you have to leave so quickly,” he answered.
