Premier League – Arsenal vs Liverpool: Liverpool have managed to take all three points against Arsenal away at the Emirates. The club did so in a crucial fixture against former Guardiola’s assistant coach and Everton midfielder Arteta’s in-form team.
The contest had a largely mediocre first half. Attempts from Van Dijk and Mane in the opening and closing minutes of the game respectively are the only notable moments.
The second half, however, did see a much more dangerous away side. Thiago only moments after nearly gifting Lacazette an assist. Created beautifully for Jota, who scored in his last touch of the game.
Minutes later, Firmino who came off the bench doubled their lead with a subtle touch of a dangerous Robertson ball in.
Other noteworthy events in the contest include the various duels between Martinelli and Alexander-Arnold. The Brazilian was a menace throughout the game and easily the hosts’ best player.
Following the match, Liverpool are now just a point behind league leaders Manchester City. Arsenal, on the other hand, have held onto the 4th position and are a point clear of United, with two games in hand over them.
Premier League – Arsenal vs Liverpool: Post-match reaction
Arsenal’s manager Mikel Arteta: “Probably we were the better team in many parts of the game, but when the defining moments were there for the taking, we have to take them, and we haven’t.
“That was the difference in the game.
“We kept trying, we believed. The way they executed the game plan was phenomenal.
“The courage and the energy that they showed. How they competed against this phenomenal Liverpool team was great to watch, but we’re disappointed because we didn’t get anything from the game.
“When you have those moments you have to score if you want to win against those teams.”
Liverpool’s manager Jürgen Klopp: “Coming here in our situation, and their situation, and not having a brilliant first half and then turning the game in the right direction is pretty special.
“You have to be on your toes because they are a proper threat.”
Liverpool’s Andrew Robertson: “Look, they’re a point better off. A fantastic team, one of the best in the world and they’ll obviously try and have a strong finish. That’s us done with the Premier League until after the international break [for] both teams, and then it’s a sprint to the finish line.” (Regarding the title race).
“We’re in the race… A lot of people maybe didn’t think we were going to be [in] January but we’re definitely in the race and we just need to focus on what we’re doing and picking up as many points as possible.”
