Robbie Simpson, the former Coventry striker turned to financial advice after retirement. He recalled his journey into this profession after hanging up his boots.
Simpson started a company LAPS (Life After Professional Sport). Through which he helps players transition to life after football.
Robbie Simpson shared the financial situations of players who would be deemed to be millionaires. And the manner in which their finances were managed.
“I heard Stephen Hughes and Arjan de Zeeuw talking, who were into their final season of their career. They discussed and were thinking about what they would do after retirement. They sounded really worried as well,” Simpson recalls.
“I was thinking since Hughes worked for Arsenal he was a millionaire and would not have to worry about working after retirement.
“I on the other hand invested a lot and saved a lot. So I thought I did manage my finances well. I observed the major difference was due to the varying lifestyles we led.
“I did receive offers from a few clubs the second and third division. But they ended up signing others instead. I had not thought about this until I reached the twilight of my career.
“The clubs, the player union and the PFA, none of them actually offer any support to players, post retirement.”
