The Belgian media are full of praise for Ruud Vormer’s debut at his new club Zulte Waregem. They praise the Dutchman’s part in Essevee’s important victory.
“Ruud Vormer guides Zulte Waregem away from last place”, headlines De Standaard. While Het Nieuwsblad describes him together with the other newcomer Christian Brüls as ‘the golden tandem of the team’. “Vormer was sentenced to the stands at Club Brugge for months. The Dutchman therefore has little or no match rhythm. And yet the former Golden Shoe winner played with the flair as if he were still active at the World Cup in Qatar last month. Dutch swagger, we call it,” they wrote.
Several newspapers speak of a ‘quality injection’ that the 34-year-old Dutchman brings. Vormer moved on a rental basis from Club Brugge to the current number seventeen of the Jupiler Pro League in the hunt for more playing time. Het Laatste Nieuws especially praises the ‘depth’ of the midfielder, while De Standaard notes that ‘Vormer was cooing with fun and throwing passes.’
Waregem coach Mbaye Leye is particularly enthusiastic about his team. “They bring so much quality, but on the other hand they are also so modest. Don’t just talk about Ruud and Christian,” he mentioned. Yet he too cannot help but praise Vormer and fellow debutant Brüls, “We have a tough battle ahead of us, but we have now clearly strengthened ourselves. The experience of the boys is of course extremely important. They act as an extension on the field.”
De Standaard does have a small comment on the dream debut of the former Feyenoord player. They wrote, “Meanwhile, Vormer also realized that he is still missing some percentages conditionally. In the second half, the Dutchman played less in the piece.” After the 2-0 in the 73rd minute, the moment came to take Vormer to the side, who left the field to loud applause.
