Serie A have confirmed that each of their Italian teams can now use five substitutions per game. So, in news of Italian football fixtures today, Serie A will allow five substitutions next season.
The rule of five substitutions has proved popular in the recent, post-pandemic scene of Italian football.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic in May 2020, the Italian top-flight implemented the system of allowing for more substitutions per match.
And with matches crammed together and fatigue growing, it makes sense to continue it into the 2021-22 Serie A season.
Serie A Will Allow Five Substitutions Next Season
So, the Lega Serie A and FIGC have announced today that they will reinstate this substitutions’ rule for next season.
The rule of five substitutions also allows takes into considerations the fixtures that go to extra time.
For such fixtures, especially frequent in the Coppa Italia, each team will have a sixth change, one more substitution.
Here, again, three slots will be available for substitutions, not including half-time.
In extra time, however, beyond the usual 90 minutes of play, the number of substitutions will increase to four slots.
The IFAB has been given the option to continue using this format instead of the traditional three substitutions each. And they intend on keeping it this way until December 31, 2022.
Meanwhile, not all professional leagues, in other countries, have decided to take advantage of the availability.
For instance, the Premier League in England have decided to limit substitutions to three per match.
