Swansea City 4-2 Preston: Joël Piroe was designated as Swansea City’s star player on Wednesday evening. With two goals, the striker had an important share in a victory with a chaotic final phase.
‘Piece of history’ is getting closer for Piroe after a flawed match
By making the 1-0 and 4-2, the season total is now eighteen goals in the Championship. “He finished coolly close and gave Swansea a dream start. In the first half he tortured Preston’s defence. What a player he is,” Wales Online wrote of Piroe, who was given a 9 by the medium and designated an outstanding player.
In addition to his double, Piroe also enabled Joe Allen to score his first for Swansea in the first half since returning to Wales last summer. The same Allen could not contain his emotions in the final phase at a score of 3-2 and had to move to the stands with red as an already substituted player. Preston North End manager Ryan Lowe also saw red in the game, which was decided by Piroe again a few minutes later.
With forty goals in the second level of England, Piroe could well prepare for a nice transfer next summer. Prior to the game with Preston, the former youth international (23) indicated to the club channels that he currently mainly hopes to achieve the twenty goals again this season. “Someone told me it’s been a long time since a Swansea player scored 20 goals two seasons in a row. As a player it’s nice when you do things that haven’t been done or maybe haven’t done for a while, it’s a little piece of history and it’s nice to have behind your name,” he said.
The player from Wijchen in Gelderland moved in the summer of 2021 from PSV to Swansea for more than one million euros. He previously also played for Sparta Rotterdam on a rental basis.
Wrexham receives open application: “I would return from retirement”
Staying in England, the appeal of Wrexham AFC seems to know no bounds. Hal Robson-Kanu is even willing to play for the National League leader for free. Earlier this year, Wrexham United tempted goalkeeper Ben Foster into a return from his football retirement.
Wrexham are on the brink of a return to professional English football. The fairytale of the Welsh club, led by Hollywood stars Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, is attracting a huge amount of attention. Not least because 40-year-old Foster joined the club last month. The former goalkeeper of Newcastle United, among others, signed a contract until the end of the season.
It remains to be seen whether Foster will still be under contract with Wrexham next season. If that happens, the veteran may be joined by Robson-Kanu. The 33-year-old former Wales international, best known for his goal against Belgium in the quarter-final of EURO 2016, is even willing to play for The Red Dragons for free.
Robson-Kanu retired two years ago after terminating his employment with West Bromwich Albion, but is interested in a restart. “I would come out of retirement to play for Wrexham next season,” the striker commented. Under an Instagram post from Reynolds. “In addition, I am willing to donate my salary to a charity that the fans can choose.”
On the threshold of League Two
Whether it will indeed come to that, remains to be seen. If Robson-Kanu does indeed join the list leader, an adventure in League Two beckons. With two games to go, Wrexham defends a four-point lead over closest pursuers Notts County. The championship can be dragged in on Saturday.
