From now on, four teams will compete for the Italian Supercoppa Italiana. Previously, this was a match between the winner of the Serie A and the winner of the Coppa Italia, now two more teams are participating in a mini-tournament, following the Spanish model.
Supercoppa will remain in Saudi Arabia, but from now on according to the Spanish model
The two best teams in Serie A and the two finalists of the Coppa Italia can now compete for the trophy, Serie A president Lorenzo Casini announced on Monday. The tournament will take place in January 2024. If it does not deliver what is hoped for, there is the option to return to the old format after that inaugural edition. The new format would be good for a turnover of 23 million euros.
The matches will not be played in Rome, Turin, Milan or Naples. The Italians have signed an agreement with Saudi Arabia. Just like the game in January this year, the next two editions of the Supercoppa Italiana will also be played in the Middle East, La Gazzetta dello Sport understands. That is nothing new: the Italian Super Cup has been played in distant countries for years. Such as China, Libya, Qatar and the United States.
Christian Vieri deals sneer at Lukaku
Former Internazionale striker Christian Vieri certainly does not have a high opinion of Romelu Lukaku. The 49-year-old Italian, who played for Inter between 1999 and 2005. Who saw the Nerazzurri fall against Spezia on Friday despite a Lukaku goal.
Due to the loss at Spezia, Inter fell even further behind leader Napoli. Which is well on its way to the Scudetto with twelve games to go. The difference with the Milanese is already eighteen points. Vieri believes that Lukaku should profile himself much more with the current number two in Serie A.
“Inter creates at least ten chances every home game. And also plays well,” said Vieri on his own Bobo TV channel. “You have Dumfries who comes up every time, just like Dimarco on the other side and then you also have Barella who puts Lukaku in a good position.”
“I’ll tell you one thing: if I had played for this Inter, I would have been top scorer every season,” said Vieri, who scored 123 times in 190 official matches for the Milanese. Inter will play against FC Porto on Tuesday evening in the return leg of the eighth finals of the Champions League. Lukaku scored the only goal in the first leg three weeks ago.
Former Inter president Massimo Moratti is also not impressed by Lukaku. “He’s in bad shape, he’s so slow,” Moratti told Leggo. La Gazzetto dello Sport expects Edin Dzeko and Lautaro Martínez to form an attack duo against Porto.
