Wout Weghorst says he has a lot of respect for Lionel Messi. After the cup match between Besiktas and Sanliurfaspor, in which Weghorst set the final score at 4-2, he discussed his much-discussed affair with Messi.
After the hard-fought victory, Weghorst drew the comparison with the lost quarter-final against Argentina. “Once again we were 2-0 behind. This was a better result. I would have liked it to have been the same at the World Cup,” he said. The final between Argentina and France did not interest Weghorst that much. “In my head and in my dreams there was only one winner and that was us,” he added.
“For me, everyone on the field is the same, Messi or Burak”
“For me, everyone on the field is the same,” Weghorst responded to questions about his relationship with Messi. “It doesn’t matter if I play against Messi or Burak, I think that’s his name,” he referred to Abdulsamet Burak, a defender of third-tier opponents Sanliurfaspor. “I will always give everything. That’s what I did on the field. I also fought against Messi.”
“There were some moments between us. I think he didn’t appreciate it and he was a bit surprised by it. I don’t like talking about others, I have a lot of respect for him. He is the best, or one of the best players ever. I wanted to show my respect to him after the game, but he was not open to that. He was still a little angry with me. I see it as a nice advantage that he knows my name now. Then I’ve done something right,” the former Wolfsburg man added.
The World Cup had a disappointing end, but it is still the highlight of his career for Weghorst. “It was the best three weeks of my career. Of course I’m still a little disappointed and you’re still thinking ‘what if’. There were only two games left. That question will always haunt my mind, but I am grateful that I was able to experience a World Cup. The game against Argentina was a highlight. Those are things you dream of as a child,” the Oranje striker concluded.
