3M Open: Hideki Matsuyama, the pre-tournament favourite, withdrew from the 3M Open due to an injury after having a terrible opening round in Minneapolis.
After shooting a first-round 77 at TPC Twin Cities, the highest-ranked player in the field and world No. 14 withdrew from the PGA Tour tournament due to wrist pain.
Matsuyama had a challenging first day, shooting a quadruple-bogey nine in addition to three bogeys and three balls in the water at the par-five 18th. He only managed one birdie.
The former Master’s winner would have entered Friday’s second round 12 strokes behind early leaders Scott Piercy and Sungjae Im if he had participated in the LIV Golf Invitational Series, which is sponsored by Saudi Arabia.
Im birdied four of his last six holes, including one from 26 feet, to finish at six under. Piercy had birdied three of his first six holes and recovered from a bogey at the ninth to start his back nine with four birdies in a five-hole stretch.
The two players have a two-stroke advantage over a group of five golfers who are all at four under, including Tony Finau, who overcame a three-putt bogey on his first hole to finish with five birdies and a first-round score of 67.
Mardy Fish, a former Davis Cup captain and ATP Tour player who received a sponsor’s invitation and is making his PGA Tour debut, is tied for last place after shooting a 10-over 81.
Fish, 43, temporarily rallied with six straight pars before losing a stroke at the par-five last. Fish was seven over after just eight holes and further fell behind with back-to-back bogeys starting at the 11th.
