LIV Golf: Marc Leishman is at peace. The 39-year-old Australian’s global ranking has fallen to No. 71 since he defected to LIV Golf earlier this year, leaving him outside the cutoff for automatic qualification to golf’s four major tournaments.
Marc Leishman has played 30 consecutive majors and is been ranked in the top 50 players in the world since 2017. He has six top-10 finishes since 2013, including a T-5 at the 2021 Masters. It run might soon end, though, as there are currently no world ranking points awarded at LIV tournaments, and Leishman is fine with that.
Prior to the Australian PGA Championship, Leishman told the Sydney Morning Herald that “(not competing in the majors) was one of the factors I had to weigh up when I did make the switch (to LIV).”
“For the past 12 or 13 years, I’ve played at almost all of the major tournaments. I’ve had my opportunities. I obviously want to play them, but it’s okay if I don’t.”
Since joining the PGA Tour in 2009, Leishman has won six tournaments. But he knew that as he gets older, winning on the Tour will only get harder.
I’ve liked my time on the PGA Tour, and the transition was fun too, he remarked. “One of the things that attracted me to it was that. You can play golf forever and I’m not getting any younger, but as you approach your 40s, you have no idea what level you will be able to play at.”
Leishman will likely continue to fall in the world rankings, which will keep him out of majors, but there is still a different way for him to qualify for half of the major championships.
In order to enter the Masters, he said, “I’ll try to qualify for the British Open and the U.S. Open, and if the world rankings happen, I’d love to get in.” In the event that it doesn’t, I’ll watch it on TV and hopefully see Cam [Smith] win it.
