Alfred Dunhill Championship: After the first round of the Alfred Dunhill Championship at Leopard Creek, Dean Burmester had a one-stroke lead over Austria’s Lukas Nemecz thanks to a back-nine birdie blitz.
Burmester, a South African, improved his score at the 10th, 11th, 13th, 15th, 17th, and 18th holes to lead the field after a seven-under 65. Nemecz, who opened with a 66, is only behind Burmester.
Burmester, a two-time DP World Tour champion who most recently claimed victory at the Tenerife Open in May 2021, also recorded two birdies on the front nine in addition to his lone bogey.
Darren Fichardt, another South African, played the 18th hole one shot behind Burmester but made a bogey to fall to five under and tie for third with five other players.
After a first-round 68, Laurie Canter of England is one stroke further back on four under than Scott Jamieson of Scotland and Tom McKibbin of Northern Ireland.
Credits for a semester Mehmet for a nine-back victory
World No. 58 Burmester and fellow professional Justin Walters founded the Birdies 4 Rhinos charity, and Burmester said that a question from Sky Sports reporter Inchi Mehmet during the middle of the round was what spurred his late run of birdies.
“I believe you made a difference, didn’t you?” After signing his card, Burmester informed Mehmet.
“We discussed the necessity for me to score more birdies for rhinos during our on-course conversation, and sure enough, it happened. I’m pleased to do that because the back nine was some of the best I’ve played in a long.”
Took a wrong drop on 18 today @LeopardCreekCC 🤦🏼 was a honest mistake, head was a bit clouded and didn’t think it thru. Only realized when I got home. Lucky for me rules are a bit softer, it used to be DQ but instead I got a 2 shot penalty. Starting tomorrow +2#DunhillChamps

2011 Masters champion Charl Schwartzel, one of Burmester’s playing partners, ended two over par following a two-shot penalty and a quadruple-bogey nine at the 18th.
The World No. 3 Cameron Smith and England’s Dan Bradbury, who won the Australian PGA Championship and Joburg Open, respectively, have won events thus far on the 2023 DP World Tour. The Alfred Dunhill Championship is the fifth stop on the tour.
