Asian Tour: Andy Ogletree beat Bernd Wiesberger by four strokes on Sunday in Cairo to win the Asian Tour’s International Series Egypt.
Ogletree, a former Georgia Tech Entire-American and 2019 U.S. Amateur champion, finished the 72-hole competition at Madinaty Golf Club at 23 under par and only dropped three strokes all week. His final score was tied for the lowest round of the competition.
The next closest finishers, Sihwan Kim and Jeunghun Wang, tied for third at 16 under, seven strokes adrift behind Wiesberger, who never came within two shots on Sunday.
Ogletree said, “This is great, really incredible,” later. “Match play has always been my favourite type of golf, and that’s kind of what it was in the end; it was a two-man race. I basically kept trying to make a lot of putts while trying to mimic what [Bernd] was doing. Fortunately, I was able to outperform Bernd; he’s a fantastic player, so it was fantastic to win.
Of course, the triumph is noteworthy not just because it was Ogletree’s first professional world ranking title, but also because he is presently serving a PGA Tour suspension for taking part in the inaugural LIV Golf event in London last June.
Ogletree claims that the suspension is over in December, even though he won’t be a member of any PGA Tour-affiliated tour at that time. He reached the last round of Q-School in November of last year, earning him conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour, but he didn’t qualify for any events this year.
Ogletree contends that there were no alternative tournaments or qualifications scheduled for that week when he agreed to participate in the LIV event, not even on the GPro Tour, the mini-tour he frequently attended.
Bottom line, Ogletree told Fire Pit Collective earlier this year, “I needed a place to play golf. “I am aware that everyone has stated that it is not about the money, but for me, the money is amazing. I needed a place to play, and it gave me a fantastic financial condition that allowed me to support my golf for the following number of years. For me, it was an easy decision. Where else could I play? There was no GPro Tour event, no Korn Ferry Tour event, and no Monday qualifier during that London-based week. There was no other place where I could play.
“I jumped at the chance to participate in a golf tournament.”
